Rotating Cutting Veneer with a Lathe:

Cutting a continuous sheet of veneer on a lathe, where the knife moves closer to the log/burl as it turns in a radius. The veneer is peeled from the outside in. This process takes time. From underground, the burls grow around many objects. Very often the machine needs to be stopped to remove rocks, barbed wire, and other sediments.

Hanging the Burl into the Lathe:
  • Each burl has to be hung at its heart.
  • Precise alignment of the burl's "eyes" to be perpendicular with the knife is essential to proper production.
Peeling a Burl:

Burls are hung by their ends and peeled from the outside in.

Stacking Burl Veneer:
  • Very delicate handling is required. Stacked in sequence.
  • The burl is scored near a defect with a saw to have the veneer sheet make one full revolution.
